Premier League Football – Week 26 Review

Only eight games in this Premier League game week as Chelsea and Spurs will head for the Capital One Cup showdown on Saturday. Can Harry Kane inspire the North Londoners to another victory over the Blues? The history suggests that Jose Mourinho’s side will win the silverware of this campaign.

In the league, the big match this weekend will be played on Sunday as Liverpool host the English champions, Manchester City at Anfield. Last year’s top two have a mountain to climb this season in order to achieve their goals. City are currently five points behind the league leaders, Chelsea, while Brendan Rodgers’ side is two points behind the fourth placed, Manchester United. In their previous meeting in the league this season, the Citizens got ahead and won 3 – 1.

Another interesting match at the weekend will be between Arsenal and Everton at the Emirates. Everton are clearly struggling this season and they’ll have to work very hard to get back to the top half of the table. The Gunners, on the other hand, have reached the third position on the table and with such an intense race for top four they’ll have to be bring their A-game unlike what they did in the midweek against AS Monaco. Van Gaal’s Manchester United are breathing down their neck and there will be a lot of movement in the table until the end of the season. The record English champions are 9/1 to lose the game on Saturday.

The Red Devils have a home fixture this weekend and they’ll look forward to bounce back from the defeat against Swansea City. Sunderland are the visitors on Saturday and they are certainly not pushovers. We can expect them to pick up all three points as they have had a great record at Old Trafford this season.

West Brom will be hosting Southampton and the odds of Saints winning at the weekend are 5/4, according to Bet365.

The other matches in this game week and the respective odds are:

West Ham vs Crystal Palace (West Ham win – 21/20, Draw – 12/5, Crystal Palace win – 11/4)

Burnley vs Swansea City ( Burnley win – 8/5, Draw – 23/10, Swansea win – 7/4 )

Newcastle United vs Aston Villa ( Newcastle win – 19/20, Draw – 5/2, Aston Villa win – 3/1 )

Stoke City vs Hull City ( Stoke win – 19/20, Draw – 23/10, Hull win – 16/5)

Premier League Football – Week 26 Review

Ten more games from the top division of England coming up this weekend. The league leaders, Chelsea are dominating at the top of the table and they are seven points clear of the second placed Manchester City.

Chelsea will play host to Burnley on Saturday and according to Bet365, Burnley’s chance of picking up all three points are 12/1. Mourinho’s men are expected to crush their opponents at the weekend and move a bit closer to winning the Premier League title. The English champions, Manchester City will feature in the late kick off on Saturday. Pellegrini’s men will go head to head with Newcastle at the Etihad and as expected the odds are stacked in favor of the Manchester giants. The Citizens are 1/4 to win the game while Newcastle are 10/1.

The 20-time English champions, Manchester United will face Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium. The odds favor the Red Devils as Gary Monk’s side are 11/4 to win the match at home, but we can’t be sure of the result as Van Gaal’s side is consistent at all.

The most interesting fixture of this game week will be played at the St. Mary’s Stadium as the Saints face Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool. Liverpool are in great form and they are gunning for the Champions League spot alongside Tottenham and Arsenal. Southampton have currently occupied the fourth spot and they are not giving up on their dream to play in Europe. This clash could prove very vital in the race for top four. There are no clear favorites in this one as according to Bet365, Southampton are 8/5 to win, a draw is 23/10 and Liverpool are 13/8 to grab all three points.

Arsenal will travel to Crystal Palace at the weekend. The Gunners are 3/4 to win the game against the Eagles. Alan Pardew would be hoping to get one better of the North Londoners and his main aim till the end of this campaign would be to climb up to the top half of the table. On the other hand, Arsene Wenger’s team can take advantage of the clash at St. Mary’s this weekend and if the Saints slip, the Gunners can reach the top four.

Spurs vs West Ham also be a very interesting tie in this game week. Spurs have been in scintillating form, but they would want to bounce back from the loss against Liverpool. Their Champions League hopes can suffer a major blow if they lose to Sam Allardyce’s West Ham. Spurs are 7/10 to win the game on Sunday.

Preview of Round 5 of the FA Cup

The Champions League returns after a big break and only sixteen teams remain in the FA Cup. This weekend, we’ll witness English teams compete in the fifth round of the FA Cup.

FA Cup 5th round Preview
FA Cup 5th round Preview

Crystal Palace will play host to the seven time winners, Liverpool. Brendan Rodgers’ side defeated Bolton Wanderers in the replay of the fourth round proper. Liverpool came back from behind and the score at the end of the match was 1 – 2, as Sterling and Coutinho scored late goals to stay in the competition. The Eagles will pose a big threat for the five-time European champions at Selhurst Park. According to Bet365, Liverpool are 21/20 to win the game on Saturday.

The other four top division teams which will go head to head this week are: West Brom and West Ham; Aston Villa and Leicester City. It is hard to predict which teams will go through as it is a competition famous for upsets. Sam Allardyce’s West Ham have had an impressive run in the league this campaign and the odds of them winning the game at the Hawthorns is ….. Paul Lambert has been sacked from his job at Aston Villa. The Villans are 29/20 to win the game at Villa Park, according to Bet365.

The holders, Arsenal will invite Middlesbrough on Sunday. The Championship team eliminated the English champions, Manchester City in the previous round and it won’t be much of a surprise if they can cause yet another upset. Middlesbrough are 13/2 to win the game at the Emirates and punters can take a chance on putting their money on them to reap huge benefits.

Manchester United are the favorites to win this prestigious cup competition as Chelsea and Manchester City have crashed out of it. Van Gaal’s men will travel to Preston on Monday and the Red Devils could grab a comfortable victory. According to Bet365, Manchester United are 4/9 to win the game, while a draw is 7/2 and not many are expecting them to lose as Preston are 13/2 to win the game.

Bradford vs Sunderland is another interesting fixture this weekend. Bradford got an incredible victory against the Premier League leaders, Chelsea in the fourth round proper. Sunderland won 1 – 3 away at Fulham and it will be anybody’s game on Sunday. The other two FA Cup matches which will be played this weekend are: Derby County vs Reading; Blackburn vs Stoke City.

Premier League Review

Things have started to heat up in the Premiership as the top three lost at the weekend, whereas the next four rankers picked up three points each. With just fifteen matches remaining in this campaign, it will be a fierce fight for the Champions League spots.

Chelsea played host to Manchester City and after ninety minutes of normal time, a winner couldn’t be decided. Chelsea drew first blood with Remy, and David Silva equalized for the Citizens. According to Bet365, a draw was 13/5 and the people betting on it can celebrate. Saints also dropped points at the weekend as they were defeated by Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium. Swansea were 17/4 to win the game and against all odds they won the game against Ronald Koeman’s side.

Van Gaal’s United move to the third position after defeating Leicester City. The 20-time English champions were in total control of the game at their home stadium. But one loss and they can stumble down to the sixth spot. Arsenal are only a point behind Manchester United as they registered a remarkable 5 – 0 victory over the Villans. Aston Villa are in big mess as they have not put the ball in the back of the net in the last ten hours of playing time. The North London club, Arsenal, are serious contestants for the top four, alike the previous seasons. The Gunners have most of their first team players back in full fitness and they also appear more solid in defense after the January window signings.

Liverpool have also picked up form off late. Their key striker Daniel Sturridge is back after a long injury haul and it didn’t take him a lot of time to get on the score sheet. The five time European champions can certainly turn around their season and retain their Champions League place. The Merseyside giants were 8/13 to win the game at their home stadium, Anfield.

In the midweek, teams will contest for the fifth round of the FA Cup. Only the teams which were held in the fourth round will play a return fixture to decide the winner.

Premier League Preview

The FA Cup fourth round is over and the top three have been eliminated from the cup competition. The Premier League is back and what a weekend it will be as the top two teams go head to head at the Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

Liverpool will invite the high flying West Ham United. Sam Allardyce’s team is seventh in the league, just a point ahead of the Merseyside giants. Brendan Rodgers’ side has a good chance of climbing up in the table. Liverpool are favorites to win at Anfield and according to Bet365, West Ham are 9/2 to win the game on Saturday.

Manchester United will play host to Leicester City this weekend. Last time when these two sides met a total of eight goals were scored as Leicester came back from behind to win 5 – 3 at their home. We can expect United’s revenge at Old Trafford on Saturday. United are 2/7 to win the match, whereas a draw is 17/4.

The biggest game of the day will be at the Stamford Bridge, as Frank Lampard returns to his former club. City have a chance to reduce the points gap to two, while Chelsea can extend it to eight. The West Londoners are favorites to win the clash. The odds of City winning are 11/4, draw: 13/5.

Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal will go head to head against the Villans. The North Londoners are 14/1 to lose the game at the Emirates.

Southampton are currently third in the Premier League table and they can maintain their standing this weekend too. The Saints face Gary Monk’s Swansea City at St. Mary’s. Southampton are 8/13 to win the game at home. The chances of a draw are 3/1, while a draw is 17/4.

Hull vs Newcastle is the early kick off on Saturday. Another important match on Saturday will be between Crystal Palace and Everton. The Toffees are just four points far away from the relegation zone.

La Liga

Today, 24th of October 2014, Real Madrid will host Barcelona at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium in the Spanish Football League – La Liga.

This fixture, known as El Clasico, is considered by many to be the biggest club competition match in the world.

Some of the worlds best players will be taking part in this game, including Cristiano Ronaldo and James Rodriguez for Real Madrid, and Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez for Barcelona.

Real Madrid come into this fixture unbeaten in its last 8 matches across all competitions, including a midweek 3-0 victory away over Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League.

Barcelona are unbeaten in their last 3 fixtures across all competitions, which includes a midweek 3-1 victory at home over Ajax Amsterdam in the UEFA Champions League.

Real Madrid will again be without Welsh international Gareth Bale who continues to be injured, while defender Sergio Ramos’s participation is also uncertain.

Barcelona have no major injury concerns, and new signing Luis Suarez looks set to make his debut after serving a suspension for an infamous biting incident at the 2014 World Cup.

Barcelona sit at the top of the La Liga table after 8 rounds, with Real being 4 points behind them in third place. With both teams being top class it is hard to split them, but we’ll go with Real Madrid who have the home ground advantage, and note that Barcelona lost to Paris Saint Germain, albeit away from home, 4 matches back.

Prediction & Tip

Bet365 are offering 2/5 for a Real Madrid Win/Draw, which is what we will be taking.

UEFA Champions League

Today, 22nd of October, 2014, Liverpool will host Real Madird at Anfield, Liverpool, on Match Day 3 of the UEFA Champions League.

The two sides have met twice before in the Champions League, in 2009 in the Round of 16, with Liverpool defeating Real Madrid 5-1 on aggregate. Before that they met in 1981 in the Final of the European Champions Clubs’ Cup, with Liverpool defeating Real Madrid 1-0 on that occasion.

Liverpool come in to this match with a form guide of L,W,D,L,W,W across all club competitions, while Real Madrid have won their last 6 matches across all club competitions.

Liverpool will be without defender Jon Flanagan and forward Daniel Sturridge due to injury, while another defender, Mamadou Sakho, will undergo a fitness test.

Real Madrid have a host of players likely to be unavailable, most notably midfielder Gareth Bale. Also missing from their match day squad will be defender Abner and forward Jese, with two noted defenders in Fabio Coentrao and Sergio Ramos under a fitness cloud.

Liverpool’s recent form has been indifferent to say the least, and their win on Sunday against bottom placed EPL club Queens Park Rangers came in the 95th minute. Their enigmatic forward Mario Balotelli needs to start delivering for the Reds if he is to have a long term future at the club.

The Real Madird juggernaut rolls on, with the club going undefeated in their last 7 matches across all competitions. The reigning UEFA champions are looking to become the first ever team to successfully defend their title, and a win here will be another step forward towards that goal.

Prediction & Tip

Liverpool fans will be hoping for a good performance, but we feel if either team here has an advantage it is Real Madrid. Bet365 are offering 1/5 for a Real Madrid Win/Draw, which is where our money will be.

A-LeagueAustralia’s professional football league, the A-League, kicks off its new season this Friday 10th October 2014.

Entering into its 10th season, this one promises to be the best so far as the league, and its players, have developed to such a standard that it is now considered to be one of the best in Asia.

Established in 2004 following the demise of the previous semi-professional league, the NSL, the A-League features 10 teams – 9 from Australian and 1 from New Zealand.

Each season the 10 teams play for the title of A-League Premiers, won by the team that finishes at the top of the points ladder at the end of the home and away season, which is then followed by a finals series, with the eventual winner of those games being known as the A-League Champions.

Additional benefits for well performed teams include inclusion into the Asian Champions League competition.

In overall terms of the competition, it’s standard, and the players that play within it, most pundits agree that America’s Major League Soccer competition is a good comparison.

For punters, one of the attractions of the A-League is its location and timezone. Each round of its games are the first professional league games to occur in the world, with Sydney and Melbourne currently being +11.00 GMT.

Following we list each team with a brief description and prediction:

Adelaide United

Finished last season: 6th

Adelaide United will be looking to improve on last season’s 6th placing, and with former Barcelona FC youth coach Josep Gombau having another year to shape the team to his style, a top 4 placing is a possibility.

Predicted finish: 4th

Brisbane Roar

Finished last season: 1st

Reigning premier’s Brisbane Roar should again prove to be very competitive, but have lost a number of their first 11 to other sides inside and outside of Australia. Manager Mike Mulvey will need to get the best possible out of his squad this season if they are to challenge.

Predicted finish: 5th

Central Coast Mariners

Finished last season: 3rd

The Central Coast Mariners are always there or thereabouts, but this season could prove too much for their limited resources, and with manager Graham Arnold defecting to Sydney FC, they will likely slip down the ladder.

Predicted finish:7th

Melbourne City (formerly Melbourne Heart)

Finished last season: 10th

Melbourne City were acquired by the owners of EPL team Manchester City in the off-season, and a benefit of this is the arrival of Spanish International David Villa for a 10 game guest stint. Other acquisitions have been made, but the squad lack the depth to seriously challenge across the length of a season.

Predicted finish: 6th

Melbourne Victory

Finished last season: 4th

One of the biggest, if not the biggest club in the league, Melbourne Victory are ready to add to their trophy cabinet this season. Their already competitive squad has been strengthened even further in the off-season, and they go into this season as one of the title favourites.

Predicted finish: 1st

Newcastle Jets

Finished last season: 7th

It’s looking like more of the same this year for the Jets, with no major notable additions to the squad and last season’s league top scorer, Adam Taggart, moving to English Championship side Fullham. Not helping things either is the matter of the club currently being for sale.

Predicted finish: 9th

Perth Glory

Finished last season: 8th

Perth Glory were one of the powerhouses nearing the end of the former NSL, but they have never really adapted to life in the new A-League. A succession of managerial changes and occasional player unrest suggest not much will change for the Glory this season.

Predicted finish: 8th

Sydney FC

Finished last season: 5th

The undisputed bling club of the competition, Sydney have previously counted famous names such as Alessandro Del Piero, Dwight Yorke and Junino amongst their playing ranks. But perhaps their best piece of recruiting in a long time is newly arrived manager Graham Arnold, considered one of Australia’s best by many pundits.

Predicted finish: 3rd

Wellington Phoenix

Finished last season: 9th

The only New Zealand team in the competition, the Phoenix are always competitive at home but not so much on the road. With no significant signings being made in the off-season, the occasional high profile upset is the best that they can hope for.

Predicted finish: 10th

Western Sydney Wanderers

Finished last season: 2nd

The Wanderers have become one of Australia’s biggest clubs in their short history. Aided by a passionate fan base, manager Tony Popovic has worked wonders with his squad. Extremely consistent in their style of play, they will contest the Asian Champions League final in a few weeks time.

Predicted finish: 2nd

If you are interested in placing a wager on an A-League fixture, Bet365 will be covering every match of the upcoming season.
